Nicole Kidman Destroys Us
She Transforms into a Damaged Detective
You know those trailers that spring up on you? The ones where, the moment you watch it, you just know you’re watching a performance that is going to really make a mark. Take 2:40 minutes to watch the coming attractions for Nicole Kidman‘s newest film, Destroyer. Although it screened at both Telluride and Toronto, Kidman’s performance has, thus far, flown under the radar. Which is shocking considering how obvious it is to us, that this is a tour de force for the two-time Academy Awarding actress.
Set in the grimmest Los Angeles that we’ve ever seen, Kidman plays Erin Bell, an LAPD detective who, as a young cop, was part of a dirty undercover sting. Her target: a California desert-dwelling meth ring lead by the demented Silas (Toby Kebbell). When a shootout ends with her partner’s demise, Bell is promoted to detective but universally hated by her fellow cops. Years later, the leader of the gang returns looking for revenge, leading Bell to come face to face with the tragedy that’s she’s been trying to drink into oblivion.
Kidman’s transformation into a dark, dead-inside human is being compared to Charlize Theron‘s in Monster, playing real-life serial killer Aileen Wournos. That part won Theron an Academy Award. We expect Kidman will be making room for one more of those Golden Boys on her mantle come 2019’s Oscar race.
Destroyer opens December 25th. Merry Christmas to us!
