Going Fiona On Shameless

No Shame in Our Love for Emmy Rossum

The Gallaghers are back, and the children have left the nest. After nearly a decade on the air, Shameless still manages to surprise us with its ridiculous situations, and if the new trailer for the upcoming batch of episodes is any indication, the show isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Whether they’re setting vans on fire, cheerleading for sex, or spreading STDs at PTA meetings, the Gallaghers, led by patriarch William H. Macy, are always up to no good.

Despite their, well, shameless antics, the Gallaghers are still remarkably endearing characters, and their loyalty to one another is admirable. Even after all they’ve been through, not to mention put each other through, the fact remains that, to them, “Nothing is bigger than family.” We’d never want to meet them in real life, but it’s hard not to admire the Gallaghers, in the same way one admires a family of ducklings trying to cross an interstate highway: they don’t stand a chance, but at least they’re trying.

With Season 9, Shameless will become the longest-running scripted series in the history of the network, but how much longer will the show endure? The way we see it, as long as we remain entertained and grossed-out by America’s favorite white trash family, Showtime will continue to bless us with more of the Gallagher clan’s ill-fated misadventures.

Shameless: Season 9 premieres September 9 on Showtime.
