Imagine that Marge from Fargo has gone over to the dark side at the hand of a writer/director who is never afraid to go there (and who is not the Coen brothers). In Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Academy-award winner Martin McDonagh (In Bruges) takes on the story of a mother whose grief over the murder of her daughter couples with outrage at local law enforcement’s lack of progress in their investigation. In what promises to be yet another unforgettable performance, Frances McDormand, (1996 Oscar winner for Best Actress for Fargo) stars as Mildred Hayes who rents three billboards (yes, outside her town of Ebbing, Missouri) and has them painted with controversial messages aimed at the fruitless efforts of the chief of police (Woody Harrelson). Mildred wants to start some trouble and boy does she ever. The sublime supporting cast includes Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Lucas Hedges (Manchester By the Sea) and Sam Rockwell (too many fabulous performances to mention) as Harrelson’s senseless second in command.
