Girls As Boys
A cinema montage of women passing as males
In this clever compilation of movie moments, the role play ranges from matters of disguise to serious gender transitioning. Most are the former: Barbra Streisand’s character in Yentl disguises herself as a male, much as Glenn Close’s in Albert Nobbs, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s in Shakespeare in Love. Cate Blanchett simply assumes a male role in I’m Not There, as does Linda Hunt in The Year of Living Dangerously and Tilda Swinton in Orlando. But for Hilary Swank as Brandon Teena in Boys Don’t Cry, being male is a serious matter of transgender identity. All to the song “Androgyny,” by Garbage.
