WINTER IS HERE
Game Of Thrones Posters Reveal Who Is Standing
Winter is here, Game of Thrones fanatics, and so are new character posters. With only about six weeks left until the final season of HBO’s critically acclaimed show, fans are getting antsy to see who will sit upon the Iron Throne — and the posters hint it could be any of the 20 remaining characters.
JON AND DANY
First we have the rightful heirs to the throne: Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow. Dany is the niece of Mad King Aerys. But in a certain twist of fate, it was determined Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, confirming the R+L=J theory for fans of the epic-length novels by George R. R. Martin. Technically Jon is the rightful heir, but he has made it clear he doesn’t like leading (no matter how good he is at it). We would love to see a strong woman on the Iron Throne, but she’ll have to confront the fact she had sex with her nephew first and maybe even kill Jon.
In the promo posters, Jon’s eyes have a dark, almost dead-like quality to them. Perhaps Jon dies again, but we know can he be resurrected. That’s where Melisandre comes in. Her witchy abilities will come in handy if Jon tries to sacrifice himself for the sake of honor.
Cersei currently sits on the Iron Throne after overthrowing the whole system with fire ala the Mad King. Euron Greyjoy has made his stake clear, and he has managed to get Cersei’s attention with his greedy and suave nature. But Euron won’t be able to protect the Queen from prophecy.
Maggie the Frog gave, quite literally, a killer prophecy that states how Cersei will die. It says she will die at the hand of her younger brother. Some people believe it’s Tyrion, but Cersei’s twin, Jaime, was born after her. If Jaime kills Cersei, it would be the biggest character development of the series. It would definitely free Jaime up to be with Brienne of Tarth because their relationship has enough sexual tension for five lives.
As Jon heads to Winterfell to fend off the White Walkers, the remaining Starks will finally be together again. That was hinted at in the teaser trailer for the upcoming six-episode season where Jon, Arya and Sansa walk through the family crypts. The voices of Catelyn and Ned echo through the chamber. They talk of Jon’s lineage, which he will soon find out.
The only Starks not pictured are the honorary member Theon Greyjoy and Bran. Bran, who has the abilities of the Three-Eyed Raven now, is one of two people who knows Jon’s parentage. Samwell Tarly went to the Citadel and uncovered the secret. Sam might not beat Bran to telling Jon, but at least there are two living people who know the truth in case one of them dies.
Jorah Mormont was finally reunited with Dany after Sam cured his greyscale. Jorah met the rest of the counsel, including the oh-so-cute couple Missandei and Grey Worm. Jon and Dany merged ally forces, so she now has the dad-like Davos backing her up. Varys also seems to be on Dany’s side, but it’s really hard to tell with him. He is very good at play the double, and sometimes even triple, agent.
The Hound is one of the most beloved characters on the show. After almost dying at the hands of Brienne a few seasons back, the Hound has come to aide of a lot of characters. He even has a fondness for Arya, which isn’t hard because it’s Arya. But the Hound might have to deal with something or rather someone in the final season: his now-zombie brother the Mountain.
Cleganebowl has been hinted in the past, and it’s about time it happen. The Mountain can only be defeated with fire now (you know, the whole zombie thing), so he has his work cut out for him. But if Hound dies, there will be some angry Game of Thrones fans out there.
THE NIGHT KING
Now we have come to the true antagonist of the whole series: The Night King. All seven season have built up to the final battle for Westeros. In the beginning fans thought it would be between the Lannisters and Dany, but we’ve already seen that. And they can’t fight more if the White Walkers take over. The Seven Kingdoms will have to unite if they want to survive the winter.
