“Unbelievable” is a word that can describe many situations, and unfortunatley it’s used in serious matters like rape and sexual assault. The word also serves as the title of a Netflix miniseries premiering Sept. 13 that stars Booksmart star Kaitlyn Dever and Hereditary actress Toni Collette.

But it’s not a buddy comedy movie like Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut. It’s based on an investigative article “An Unbelievable Story Of Rapepublished by ProPublica and NPR. The provocative 8-part show will tell the story laid out in the article. Marie says she was bound and raped by a man wearing a black scarf around his face. His moves were calculated: He had her shower and took the sheets with him. Marie went to the police, then she was later convinced it could be a dream. Then she told the police she made it up.

The show will explore how two detectives, played by Collette and Merritt Wever, band together to solve Marie’s case.

The post #MeToo era is shaping up to bring more of these all-too-real stories to the forefront. This narrative is too common, and it needs to be talked about. Unbelievable will likely show the repercussions of not believing someone and how survivors suppress their trauma for fear of backlash. Trust me, this writer knows the feeling all too well.

Unbelievable is not intended for all audiences, and it could be disturbing for some viewers. If you are a survivor of sexual assault, don’t hesitate to call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673.
