The Bisexual

Hulu's Sexy New Comedy

Desiree Akhavan has already made a name for herself with her acclaimed feature films, Appropriate Behavior and The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which was a Sundance darling this past year, winning the Grand Jury Prize. Now, the New York auteur is taking her talents across the pond to England for a new television series.

The Bisexual is being produced for Channel 4 in the UK, but will be distributed on American shores by Hulu. This six-part series follows Leila, a New Yorker who moves to London and subsequently breaks up with her long-term girlfriend. Following the split, she moves into the apartment of her novelist friend (Brian Gleeson) while rebuilding her life and exploring the dating world with both men and women.

It’s an old joke that bisexuals aren’t real, that they’re indecisive and haven’t “chosen a side.” This myth is even played with in Netflix‘s Insatiable, in which a character discovering their sexuality while simultaneously dealing with another character’s  pending exorcism exorcism, says, “If demons are real, maybe bisexuals are, too!” Yeah, Insatiable is a bonkers show, but The Bisexual is definitely leaning in a more grounded, realistic direction.

Desiree Akhavan is one of the most talented young filmmakers working today, and with this series, she’s expanding her reach to a global scale. The Bisexual is aiming to tell a compelling tale of humanity, of romance that doesn’t fit within the binary standards of gay or straight, and a pleasantly funny comedy with an eye for clever and knee-slapping humor.

The Bisexual is currently airing on Channel 4 in the UK. It will be released on Hulu at an undisclosed future date.
