Mrs. Maisel is Marvelous

The Actors! The Costumes! The Triumphant Return!

Amazon Prime has launched a number of high profile series, to varying degrees of success. For every Jack Ryan, Patriot, or Man in the High Castle, there is another poorly-advised project, like Zombieland (which didn’t make it past the pilot) or the legendarily misguided Crisis in Six Scenes. Basically, it’s hard to measure what’s going to be successful on regular television, much less on the wildcard world of streaming.

One of the most pleasantly unlikely hits in recent memory, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel follows a Jewish housewife with dreams of becoming a world-famous comedienne. It may sound like a familiar story, but this one is set in 1958, which was a far different time for female comedians (i.e. there weren’t any). We weren’t nearly as progressive as we are today, and we’re not nearly as progressive as we’d like to think we are, if you know what we’re saying.

Audiences responded to the show’s mix of politics, heartwarming storytelling, and fast-witted comedy. The show swept the Emmys, winning five awards, including Best Directing and Writing (to the genius Amy Sherman-Palladino), Best Actress (to Rachel Brosnahan, one of our favorites in House of Cards), Best Supporting Actress (to the hilarious Alex Borstein), and Outstanding Comedy Series. In addition to its awards praise, the show also won the favor of viewers, becoming a big hit of all ages for its classic mix of old-timey comedy and honest (but still entertaining) depiction of the era it represents. Of course, the deal is sealed by the other stellar cast members led by Tony Award-winner Tony Shaloub, Luke Kirby (spot on as real-life comic Lenny Bruce), Kevin Pollack, and Michael Zegen.

With season two on the horizon, we know that audiences can’t wait to find out what’s in store for Midge and her budding career as a big-time stand-up comedian! But PROVOKR can give you a big hint: “We’re going to the Catskills!” In the meantime, Amazon has prepped us with a delightful trailer showing off all the humor, all the action, and all the excitement fans have come to expect from their new favorite show.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel debuts its second season on December 5. Season one is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
