Anna Paquin in Bellevue

WGN America's Edgy TV Thriller

BY: Zak Wojnar

WGN America may not yet have the prestige of networks like FX and AMC, but the young cable network certainly has some solid series under its belt, including Salem and Outsiders. While both were sadly short-lived, the critically-acclaimed shows helped solidify WGN’s status as an up-and-comer in the adult-oriented television space.

The network’s newest show, Bellevue, isn’t actually an original production; the Canadian show already aired in its homeland earlier this year, but WGN picked it up for its debut in the United States.

Anna Paquin stars as Detective Annie Ryder, a cop with a troubled past tasked with uncovering the truth behind the disappearance of a transgender teenager. Meanwhile, her past comes back to haunt her as she finds herself taunted with the same mysterious messages she was disturbed by as a child. Could her past be connected with her current investigation? The mystery will unravel, piece by piece, over the course of eight episodes.

The irony of a show produced and set in Canada being picked up by a network called WGN America notwithstanding, Bellevue is a great match for the outlet; it’s a pulse-pounding, nail-biting, white-knuckle thriller with the Oscar-winning Paquin showing off her tremendous acting range in a raw, emotional, and empowering performance. Being a Canadian export a year off from its original release in its home territory, it’ll be easy to accidentally overlook this one; don’t make that mistake!

Bellevue will air on WGN America in early 2018.
