Women are making moves in television and film, and we love to see it. Female creators and directors are increasing their presence in television, especially. With the upcoming directorial debut from badass Brie Larson, 2019 will prove to be a good year for women in the industry. Here are four shows and films from female directors that you will be able to stream:

WHEN THEY SEE US

Ava DuVernay is the one woman who can’t let us down. She continuously cranks out the best movies, shows and documentaries. When They See Us is her latest endeavor. The four-part limited series that will debut on Netflix on May 31 follows the case of the Central Park jogger. A woman was raped, and the police accused five people of color with the crime. DuVernay remains to be relevant and a spokesperson for minorities, which is one of the many reasons we love her.

RUSSIAN DOLL

Russian Doll has taken the streaming world by storm with its zany plot and its female lead. Creators Amy Poehler, Leslye Headland and Natasha Lyonne create an amazingly developed world. Headland and Lyonne both land directing credits and so does Jamie Babbit.

BIG LITTLE LIES

We don’t have a trailer for Big Little Lies season two yet, but we do have a director. Andrea Arnold has jumped on board to direct the whole second season, which makes sense for this female-led crew. It will be great to have a woman in the director’s seat for this HBO hit, especially with Meryl Streep on set.

UNICORN STORE

This colorful film marks the directorial debut of Brie Larson, who also plays the lead. The Captain Marvel star enlisted the help of her co-star Samuel L. Jackson. Though it’s different from her previous two hits, including Room, we know Larson will still kick butt in this Netflix Original.
