Ryder

Winona Is So Very

BY: PROVOKR Editors

What can be said about Winona Ryder that hasn’t already been stated a thousand times? She’s beautiful, she’s talented, and she’s one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood. Back in the day, she was the girl every guy wanted to date and every girl wanted to be her best friend. Nowadays, she’s the most courageously righteous mother on TV, courtesy of the Netflix juggernaut, Stranger Things.

Everyone has their favorite Winona. Some people like her for her period of teenage stardom in atypical teen movies like Heathers, while others fondly recall her tenure as Tim Burton’s muse in movies like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. For decades, there were rumors of development moving forward on a Beetlejuice sequel, but nothing has come to fruition yet. Still, in today’s Hollywood of revivals and distant sequels to beloved classics, there’s always a chance that Beetlejuice could return to work his black magic on a new generation of viewers.

We don’t know if anyone truly prefers the late 1990s version of Winona, though she did add a degree of heart and soul to Alien Resurrection, a quirky and possibly deliberately uneven film. But hey, that’s what happens when you let Joss Whedon write a sci-fi horror sequel to be directed by the man who made Amélie. What an odd combination, right?

Even though we’re celebrating Winona as a “Retro Sexy” star, there’s no time like the present, and it’s easy to argue that Ryder’s best work can be found in her recent output. She was stunning in the underrated action/thriller Homefront (written by Sylvester Stallone), and then blew us all away in the little-seen R-rated comedy, Destination Wedding. An adult take on the “mismatched romantic pairing” genre, the film reunited her with her Bram Stoker’s Dracula co-star, Keanu Reeves.

Most young people these days know Winona from her work on Stranger Things, as the long-suffering mother of Will Byers, a child who suddenly goes missing, kicking off the events of the series. You probably don’t need us to tell you how cool Stranger Things is; everyone and their dog is hooked on the show, and we’re all eagerly awaiting the debut of season 3 on July 4. We anticipate families across the country grilling up a ton of burgers and hot dogs before settling in to binge watch the new batch of episodes. It’s going to be terrifying and delicious!
