Did you know Selena Gomez is a producer on 13 Reasons Why on Netflix? The pop star was also originally cast as Hannah Baker, the teenage girl who commits suicide that begins the bizarre tale of high school and redemption, but opted to produce the TV show instead. The role later went to Australian Katherine Langford. Having Gomez as one of the show’s producers has its perks, namely offering up a single for the debut of season two of the teen drama.

The lead single from the soundtrack of the second season of 13 Reasons Why is “Back To You,” a delightful song about returning to an old lover and admitting your faults and hopes for the future. The song is very soulful with a hint of sadness at its center that is accentuated by Selena Gomez’s tender singing voice. It’s a very catchy song that gives you a bittersweet feeling of longing and regret, much like the themes of 13 Reasons Why, with lyrics like,

“Took you like a shot
Thought that I could chase you with a cold evening
Let a couple years waterdown how I’m feeling about you
(Feeling about you)
And every time we talk
Every single word builds up to this moment
And I gotta convince myself I don’t want it
Even though I do (even though I do)”

The single’s music video, directed by Scott Cudmore, is an homage to French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard’s 1965 film Pierrot le Fou, especially in its style, tone, and storyline of a man and woman constantly on the run from criminals. Gomez even sports French actress Anna Karina’s bangs and a short bob hairdo from another Godard classic A Band of Outsiders. Needless to say, the music video has an energy and playfulness that completely belongs to Selena Gomez.

It’s believed the song is about her on-again-off-again relationship with Justin Bieber, or her other past relationships with the likes of The Weeknd, music producer Zedd, and Twilight’s Taylor Lautner, who, along with Bieber, are from various destinations she lists when talking about escaping in the music video: “Italy. France. Canada. Russia. Michigan.”

13 Reasons Why: Season 2 (Music from the Original TV Series) features music from OneRepublic, New Order, Tears For Fears, and Telekinesis is out now on Spotify and Apple Music, while the TV show is also available to watch in its entirety only on Netflix.
