R&B Sensation Khalid
The Singer Longs For His Ex-Lover in Saved
Georgia-born R&B singer Khalid (full name Khalid Donnel Robinson) released his debut album American Teen earlier this year to critical and commercial success. In fact, he’s up for five Grammy Awards this year, including Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best New Artist, Best R&B Song, Best Music Video, and Song of the Year for Logic’s “1-800-273-8255.” The 19-year-old singer had a great 2017 and he ends it with the release of the new single “Saved.”
The music video, directed by David Hedman, opens with Khalid calling his ex-girlfriend, played by Australian model Nyadak “Duckie” Thot, but getting her voicemail instead. Throughout the video, which was filmed on location in Mexico, he thinks about the good times and the bad times from their past relationship. It almost feels like a music video inspired by Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight with its imagery of young love and heartache with sandy beaches and ocean waves.
The song evokes a longing that could only be categorized from your first real heartbreak with lyrics like, “But I’ll keep your number saved/’Cause I hope one day you’ll get the sense to call me/I’m hoping that you’ll say/You’re missing me the way I’m missing you.” It’s a pain that most people know all too well, as Khalid’s raw emotions surpass his young age. Hopefully, he’ll have better luck in love in 2018.
Khalid kicks off a 21-city North American tour called “The Roxy Tour” at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on January 27th.
