The Stars of ‘Solo’
Alden Ehrenreich Leads the Star Wars Spin-Off
Disney and Lucasfilm have committed to a goal of releasing a new Star Wars movie every year until the end of time. Starting with 2015’s Episode VII: The Force Awakens, they’ve held true to that promise, alternating between numbered episodes of the main story and self-contained spin-off entries like 2016’s Rogue One.
Currently scheduled for a May 25, 2018 release, Solo looks to tell the origin story of Han Solo, the iconic character made famous by Harrison Ford way back in 1977. Let’s take a look at some of the sexy stars who will be starring in the film!
Han Solo is easily one of the most legendary figures in the history of cinema, if not all fiction, and that’s seriously not a hyperbolic statement. Harrison Ford‘s take on the scoundrel/smuggler is an impossible act to follow, so to say Alden Ehrenreich has big shoes to fill is a colossal understatement, to say the least.
Lando Calrissian is right up there with Han Solo in the pantheon of roguishly charming Star Wars heroes. Donald Glover (Community, Atlanta) is playing the role originally made famous by Billy Dee Williams, the most handsome man who ever lived. We’re confident Glover can muster the mustache necessary to look the part, but can he hold a candle to Billy Dee? Time will tell!
Best known for her work on Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke tried to break out into big-budget sci-fi blockbusters with 2015’s Terminator: Genisys, as a rebooted Sarah Connor, but the movie failed to find much of an audience. Fortunately for her (and her passionate fandom), Clarke has another shot at the A-List with her role in Solo; she’s playing “Kira,” though the significance of her character is being kept under wraps for now.
Like Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton is a victim of LucasFilm’s infamous policy of secrecy regarding the plots of their films. However, rumors and speculation suggest that the Westworld and Mission: Impossible 2 star might be playing an Imperial pilot or officer, or perhaps a Rebel spy posing as an Imperial pilot or officer… So mysterious!
One of the earliest additions to the cast, the lovely and talented Woody Harrelson is playing Beckett, Solo’s mentor in the criminal underworld. Harrelson is hot off a fantastic 2017 in which he starred in two of the most critically-acclaimed movies of the year (War for the Planet of the Apes and Three Billboards in Ebbing, Missouri), and he’s looking to extend his winning streak with this pivotal role in Solo.
The biggest wildcard in Solo is Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the young actor/writer best known for her BBC series, Fleabag. Like all the rest of the women in the film, her role is being kept mysterious, but one can reasonably expect this rising star to steal all of her scenes!
Originally, Michael K. Williams was cast as an underworld figure, but when the original directors (Phil Lord and Christopher Miller) dropped out and were subsequently replaced with Ron Howard, Williams was unable to return for the necessary reshoots. Paul Bettany was hired to replace him, and the role was changed from a CGI motion-capture alien to a human character.
