The Aftermath: The Story

Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgard and Ridley Scott Interviewed

Fox Searchlight released to PROVOKR this personal and revealing video of the talent telling the story of The Aftermath through interviews and film clips. Each actor tells their story from their character’s point of view and how they approached the project. In addition, we hear from the writer, director, and from the executive producer Ridley Scott.

After the end of World War ll a wife, Rachel Morgan (Keira Knightley) rejoins her husband, Colonel Lewis Morgan (Jason Clarke) on his assignment to rebuild Hamburg. The city has been firebombed to the ground and they are still finding bodies. The horrors of war are felt on a very personal level. The Colonel requisitions a house from a wealthy German, Stefan Luber (Alexander Skarsgard) and the American couple decide to allow he and his daughter to stay and share the expansive mansion.

The tension in the house is first felt between the fear ¬†between deadly enemies: the Americans and the Germans. Then there is heightened tension in the shared house as we see how each character has been changed. The husband is no longer the same, he is a different man. A steamy and secretive sexual relationship born out of physical need between Rachel and Stefan soon becomes more as their needs change. The director, James Kent remarked, “It’s an extraordinary moment, we have this incredible story of three individuals who are lost and the universal story of how we repair ourselves and move on in life.” It is fascinating to understand how each actor was attracted to the project and the vision of the writer, director and producer.
