Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya
His Breakout Role is the Best of 2017
Daniel Kaluuya has had smaller roles in big popular projects over the years. He was a teen writer for and an actor in the seminal teen British series, Skins (along with Nicolas Hoult). He was in the first season of the sci-fi drama Black Mirror in the disturbing X-Factor-inspired episode, Fifteen Million Merits. And he played an FBI agent in 2015’s crime-thriller Sicario.
But this year, Kaluuya has flipped that coin and is the big lead in what was supposed to be a small, indie film, Get Out. Well, we all know what happened to that plan. Not only has writer/director Jordan Peele’s horror film Get Out become the surprise hit of 2017, the 4.5 million dollar-budget movie has gone on to earn $175 million! It’s also earned Kaluuya both a Golden Globe and an Independent Spirit nomination for his role as Chris Washington, the kidnapping victim of a strange group of body snatchers. No spoilers, but don’t judge a kook by its cover, know what we’re saying?
Looks like 2018 is going to be just as promising for the 28-year-old performer. In February you’ll see him co-starring in the highly anticipated Marvel movie, Black Panther…along side every hot, young black actor around, including Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Sterling K. Brown, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira. And he’s in director Steve McQueen‘s next thriller, Widows. He co-stars with Jon Bernthal, Elizabeth Debicki, and Liam Neeson in a female-driven drama about four mob widows seeking payback for their husbands’ demise.
Clearly Kaluuya is a good team player in these ensemble films, but we have a feeling after this awards season, which is already so sweet on Get Out, he’ll have top billing again very soon.
Widows is due out November 16, 2018.
