Diane Kruger Smolders
She Stars in the Oscar-nominated, In the Fade
German actor Diane Kruger has been the darling of the Cannes Film Festival for almost 15 years. The former fashion model first received the Chopard Trophy for Female Revelation at Cannes FF 2003, an award given out to promising young performers to encourage their careers. She’s since hosted the festival, has been on the jury, and finally, in 2017, she received the Best Actress award for her role in the German thriller, In the Fade.
She’s been making French and German films (she’s fluent in both languages) for years but Americans first got to see her European talent in the Nicolas Cage starrer, National Treasure (2004), where she played the shrewd helpmate to a historical treasure hunter, and in 2004’s Troy, as the face that launched a thousand ships, Helen.
Kruger started dating actor Joshua Jackson in 2006 and for ten years was better known as half of one of the most fashionable couples to walk the red carpets of premieres. She was still starring in award-winning films like 2009’s Inglorious Basterds and making great television such as The Bridge in 2013, playing a detective with Asperger syndrome, but her stylish entrances to major events was her claim to fame. Until this year.
Already a contender for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, In the Fade has also catapulted Kruger’s name to top of many Best Actress lists. In the political thriller, Kruger plays the wife of a Turkish translator living in Hamburg with their five-year-old son. When her family is killed in a terrorist bombing, she seeks a savage revenge against the neo-nazis responsible.
To show she’s not too serious, she made a Funny Or Die video (below) playing the one and only Kellyanne Conway. It’s been well received but one complaint throughout the thread of comments is that Kruger is just too pretty to play the antiheroine. Can’t say we disagree.
2018 looks to be equally interesting for the actor. She’s starring in three fact-based films: JT Leroy about the notorious, fake literary writer (played by Kristen Stewart), Butterfly in the Typewriter about another famous writer, John Kennedy Toole who wrote A Confederacy of Dunces, and is currently filming The Women of Marwen, about a man recovering from a brutal attack through art therapy.
As for her romantic life, Kruger’s been quietly seeing The Walking Dead‘s Norman Reedus since they starred in the drama, Sky, two years ago. It’s quite a change from her high-profile relationship with Jackson, but one for which we think the stylish 41-year-old is well-suited.
