You know him as the superhero and demigod Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Chris Hemsworth is more than just the god of thunder. Sure, we’ve watched him play the action roles accented by his good looks and muscular physique, but beneath that leading man exterior, Hemsworth is a fantastic comedic actor. That’s what makes him so perfect as Thor. But, enough about Marvel, let’s get to know Hemsworth better and explore some of his other roles.

Hemsworth was born in Melbourne, Australia and split his time growing up between Melbourne and the Australian outback. He’s not the only member in his family to be bitten by the acting bug, both of his brothers were as well. His older brother Luke was a series regular on the HBO series Westworld and his younger brother Liam starred in the Hunger Games franchise. Hemsworth’s big break came when he played Kim Hyde in the Australian soap opera Home and Away (the same show that launched the careers of Eliza Scanlen, Heath Ledger, Isla Fisher and more).

After leaving Home and Away in 2007, Hemsworth was looking for the next thing. And that came along in 2009 in his role as George Kirk, James Kirk’s father, in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. Although he was only in the opening scene, that was enough to put him on the path to superstardom. Shortly after Star Trek, Hemsworth won the role of Thor in 2011’s Thor, a part he has played for nearly a decade. In between shooting Marvel parts, he was also in Snow White and the Huntsman and Rush. He also showed off his funny bone in Joss Whedon’s horror-comedy Cabin in the Woods.

Hemsworth has some exciting projects on the horizon: the next installment in the Thor series Thor: Love and Thunder, a Hulk Hogan biopic (yes, he will be Hulk Hogan) and the sequel to his most recent movie, Extraction. While we wait for all of them, watch some of his earlier films and don’t forget Extraction playing now on Netflix
