Tartan & Tweeds
Cozy up with the hottest trend of the season
With sweater weather upon us and the holiday season fast approaching, it’s time to pull out those flannel shirts and tweed jackets. For Fall 2018 tartan prints and tweeds are more than just cozy dressing, it’s the hottest trend of the season.
Tartans and tweeds can be seen this season outside of watching The Crown or Mary Queen of Scots. The combination of fabrics has been prevalent on the runway from designers such as Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, and Calvin Klein, to name a few. These designers have taken classic plaid prints and combined it with the elegance of tweed to give a polished look. By blending the two fabrics, it creates texture and sophistication.
Tartan prints date back to the 16thcentury as a way for Scottish highlanders to set themselves apart from rival clans. There are over 4000 registered tartan prints today and having been commonly used by designers like Vivienne Westwood, Hollywood hunks such as Michael B. Jordan and the newest member of the Royal family Meghan Markle. Tweeds, including herringbone, houndstooth, Prince of Wales, and donegal have been the universal fabric in menswear for centuries.
While many might associate tartan and tweeds with the English countryside, this season’s trend is not only for the conservative. It can be updated by adding color, layering and being open to mixing and matching. Whether you’re looking to update outerwear or putting together a killer outfit for the holiday party, you can count on the combination of these fabrics to set you apart.
