Saint Laurent Amazes

A Little Bit Country, a Little Bit Rock 'n Roll

Saint Laurent’s Spring/ Summer ’19 show brought the two things to Paris fashion week it always does: glamour & sex. With creative director Anthony Vaccarello at the helm, this season was a mix of modern western and steamy rock and roll. Shown at the Trocadéro fountain with a breathtaking backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, models strutted down an infinite pool runway (à la the wedding scene in Crazy Rich Asians) in mostly all black.

Vaccarello incorporated masculine and feminine into his collection by showing velvet smoking jackets, tuxedo pants, chiffon dresses and fishnet bodysuits. Following the post-#MeToo movement, the vibe was “I am woman hear me roar” as women reclaim their sexual power. Button up tailored suits with cropped pants were shown next to chain mail, see-through tops and mini-skirts. The strong contrast showed as leather blazers were paired with secretary-like bow neck blouses and micro shorts.

A western trend that was more Coachella than rodeo was also prevalent. Denim short shorts with big silver buckles were accessorized with wide brim hat and neck ties. The urban cowgirl took centerstage in western cut jackets with studded lapels. These looks were followed by long, flowing chiffon prairie dresses that floated down the runway.

But as is Saint Laurent’s signature, Vaccarello shined with his sexy rocker girl glamour. Leg cuts were high and necklines were low. Asymmetrical swimwear that showed all the right bits owned the runway. Long romantic chiffon ruffle dresses left little to the imagination as underpinnings were sparse. And what could be more rocker than a leather marching band jacket with ruffle sleeves, gold disco dresses, and a sequin romper with a plunging neckline and ruff detail? A look that has Lady Gaga’s name written all over it.

As celebrity sirens including Kate Moss, Zoe Kravitz, and Cindy Crawford sat front row, this was by far the most glamourous show of the spring 2018 season.
