Dear Mr. Shakespeare

Asking the Bard for some answers

BY: Liz MacDonald

Written and performed by visual artist Phoebe Boswell, “Dear Mister Shakespeare” is a mesmerizing short film that breaks down Othello and its cultural implications to ask some hard questions about otherness, blackness, and immigration. Shot over two and a half days as part of the British Council’s Shakespeare Lives Project, it incorporates spoken word, dance, visual imagery, performance art and music to engage the viewer and subvert our expectations. You’ll want to watch it a few times to catch all the interwoven storytelling elements, including a riveting appearance by actor and hip-hop artist Ashley Thomas (aka Bashy)  from HBO’s “The Night Of.”

“Dear Mister Shakespeare” is directed by Shola Amoo and was a favorite at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. You can see it in full, above.
