Sam Heughan: Hot Scot

Outlander's Sexy Leading Man

In Outlander, Sam Heughan plays the hottest ancient Scotsman since Mel Gibson in Braveheart.

The Starz series, based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, follows Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) who time travels from 1945 back to 18th century Scotland. It may seem like a hokey concept ripe for camp and silliness, but Outlander plays its premise surprisingly straight, allowing for a sincere blend of whimsical romance, historical drama, and epic action, courtesy of wartime sequences which wouldn’t seem out of place on Game of Thrones.

Through it all, the crux of the show is the relationship between Claire and James, played by Heughan, a smoking-hot Scottish actor. When he was first cast, author Gabaldon said, “That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart. Having seen Sam Heughan not just act, but be Jamie, I feel immensely grateful to the production team for their painstaking attention to the soul of the story and characters.”

Claire and James’ star-crossed, chronologically-displaced love affair is the heart and soul of Outlander. It helps that they’re not sappy, one-note characters who can be found in a third-rate romance novel like Twilight; they feel like real people, and Claire, in particular, has been praised for being more developed and feminist than the typical doe-eyed female romantic lead.

The series recently returned for its third season, which sees Claire returned to her home era, desperately searching for a way to return to the past, while James is in hiding, a fugitive on the run. Both characters are trying to move on with their lives – via steamy sex scenes with other partners – but can’t let go of their desire for one another. Will Claire and James get back together? If they do, what will happen to Frank and Mary? We like Frank and Mary! It would be a shame to see them unhappy, even though, obviously, we are Team Claire and James forever.

Outlander is currently airing new episodes every Sunday on Starz, leading up to a season finale on December 3. The show has already been picked up for a fourth season, which will surely air sometime in 2018. Finally, we can’t help but to stir the pot on a potential John Grey spin-off, so… Here’s hoping!
