Hulu's hot period piece
Don’t let the title fool you, Harlots is as empowering as it gets. Set in 18th century England, when prostitution ironically served as a woman’s only avenue of financial mobility, the series follows Margaret Wells, a brothel owner with daughters of her own. When asked about the controversial topic of the show, EP Alison Owen told critics at TCA that Harlots, replete with an all-female writing staff, provides a “whore’s eye view,” and has “no male gazes.” If Owen is to be believed, this show promises to feature courtesans who aren’t objects, but masters of their world, purveyors of their bodies, and beholden to no man. Oh, and the trailer’s pretty awesome. Long Live the Matriarchy!
