A singer about to go stratospheric
Julia Michaels is probably the most famous musician you’ve never heard of. She’s an established hitmaker, the creative genius behind tracks for Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, Gwen Stefani, Justin Bieber, Jason Derulo, Kelly Clarkson, Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas and Britney Spears, just to name a few. Her collaborations have landed twelve singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Eight of those reached the Top 40. Up until now, Michaels has always been more comfortable out of the spotlight. But something happened this past year that changed her mind.
When Michaels and her writing partner Justin Tranter penned a new song, “Issues” at a songwriting camp, they’d planned on handing it off to a big name talent (and more than one immediately laid claim to it). But Michaels was surprised to realize she couldn’t give it away: “It was the first time I’d written a song that sounded so much like myself that I couldn’t picture anyone else singing it.” So Michaels fought successfully to get “Issues” back, and it’s become her first single.
Republic Records has now signed Julia Michaels and her debut EP is planned for this spring. “Finding my voice this year has been really crucial for me,” she’s said. Now that Michaels has found that voice, we’re going to be hearing a lot more from her. In the meantime, enjoy her vocals on “Carry Me,” a collaboration with Norwegian DJ and record producer Kygo, above.
