Tribes of Palos Verdes
Jennifer Garner In The Role Of A Lifetime
The trailer for The Tribes of Palos Verdes may make the family drama look like it’s centered around its most well-known star, Jennifer Garner. However, her character, a former model-turned suburban mom, is merely a piece in the emotional puzzle that is the Mason family. Drama ensues after the family makes the move to Paols Verdes, an affluent community on the outskirts of Los Angeles.
As usual in reality and in fiction, the seemingly perfect marriage falls apart in heartbreaking fashion. Dad (Justin Kirk) flaunts his new, much younger girlfriend, Mom has a public and embarrassing breakdown, and their son (Cody Fern) turn to drugs and bad boy posturing in a desperate cry for help. In the book upon which the film is based, written by Joy Nicholson, daughter Medina (Malika Monroe) is the POV narrator. Amidst the utter desolation of her broken family, the young teen turns to the beautiful ocean surrounding the picturesque Palos Verde area. She discovers an earnest passion for surfing and uses it to find solace in the never-ending roller coaster ride of life.
Goran Visnjic, Alicia Silverstone, and Joely Fisher all contribute to the film’s stellar casting. The film itself is something of a trial by fire for directors Emmett and Brendan Malloy. Whether they are directing solo or as a team, they are mostly known for their work on music videos by artists ranging from The Kooks and Ke$ha to Metallica and Blink-182, as well as the music documentary, The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights. Will this be the feature that helps them break out into the realm of big-time movie-making? Time will tell, but hopes are high that the film becomes an awards season hit.
The Tribes of Palos Verdes open in theaters December 1st.
