The Queen's Fenty X Puma line revs up NYFW
We all know Robin Rihanna Fenty is a worldwide pop star. Over the past decade, the Barbadian songbird has released eight albums (her most recent, Anti, launched in 2016 and reached #1 on the Billboard Charts) and has sold over 230 million records across the globe. She is one of few artists who releases her music on her own label (Westbury Road Entertainment), and she is a co-owner of Tidal, a premium music streaming service.
In addition to her musical talents, she’s also expanded into the realms of film. Last year, she co-wrote and recorded “Sledgehammer,” for the Star Trek Beyond soundtrack, and she recently signed on to appear in Ocean’s Eight, a spin-off/sequel to Steven Soderbergh‘s Ocean’s Eleven film series. Most recently she played a key role in Luc Besson‘s latest sci-fi adventure, Valerian and the City of a Thosand Planets.
Like many huge singers, Riri’s also dipped her lacquered toe into the fashion/beauty/style pool. Her series of delicious perfumes and colognes for both men and women with seductive names like Nude, Rebelle, Crush, and Kiss has quickly expanded to other beauty ventures. Her makeup line, Fenty Beauty, launching this week, is a hugely inclusive line. Her 40 shades of foundation for consumers of all colors, addresses the chief complaint of many beauty lines: the lack of diverse options for women of color. It’s being reported that many of the colors are already sold out, indicating an early success for Fenty Beauty.
Of course, Riri has always been a world-class fashionista. Her costume-inspired appearances at the Met Gala are the most anticipated arrivals every year. But make no mistake, there is a tomboy hidden underneath all that glamour. So when Rihanna joined forces with Puma and became their creative director in 2014, we only expected incredible things. The collaboration, called Fenty X Puma, debuted at New York Fashion Week in 2015 and was met with rave reviews.
This fall, her sporty-meets-glam Spring 2018 clothing line made another massive splash at New York Fashion Week. A heady combination of X Games and sex games, Rihanna has turned up the heat on the spandex athleisure look that we’re accustomed to seeing at the gym. The fashion show was as exciting as the clothing, featuring BMX riders, millennial pink mountains, and—obviously—game-changing fashion. Even within the over-the-top sensibilities of NYFW, this was something special, and Rihanna proved, without a doubt, that she’s officially a titan in the world of fashion.
